Editor's Note
During the last four years of my teaching
digital media in Los Angeles schools, on numerous occasions
my students have asked me how they can learn to be creative.
I just read them an ancient Persian poem: " To reach
the nest of love, your heart should learn to fly". I tell them
I can't start the fire you need burning inside you, but I may
be able to help you to enrich the creative meal you will cook
with that fire!
I sincerely believe a creative person, one who wants
to be called an artist, needs continuous exposure to art and
culture. When I tell a 3D animation student of mine that he/she
needs to watch classic and art movies, go to art exhibitions,
listen to classical music and read the great literature of the
world, I am asked: "What all these have to do with 3D animation?"
In art, regardless of the field you are in or your
position in a creative team, you should have a good or at least
a general grasp of contemporary and historical world art. This
will train your taste and will show its effects in what ever
you create or be a part of. There is great treasure left by
our ancestors to discover. You can't claim to be original if
you are not aware of the history of art. I go even further to
say it's important to have good knowledge of our world in general.
You feel a lot richer inside when you are aware of the world
you are living in.
To help to put our readers in touch with the world of
art, from next issue of DJ we will have links to museums, concerts,
movies, book fairs and art exhibitions. Please let us know what
would you like to find in DJ?
